6. Identify and explain the ways in which films are distributed.
Focusing primarily on: ~the formats upon which they are distributed ~the target audience ~include any synergy techniques
2
Distribution The giving out of media texts via a specific platform to a target audience. This can be done directly or indirectly to the audience.
3
Directly to the public…
Depending on the type of film made, it could be distributed either theatrically or for home viewing Films are primarily distributed through the cinema, where people pay to see the films DVD (and later possibly DVD boxsets) Blu-Ray Video-on-demand Download Television programmes

~Audience… Cinema is enjoyed by all ages, meaning a wide audience as cinemas have integrated into towns/ cities. It’s target audience depends on the genre of film made/ rating etc, as they vary from person to person. While it is able to reach a wide audience, in recent years prices have shot up leaving people not visiting as much as before.
5
Digital Distribution Nowadays because of lack of cinema interest due to cinema prices, films are distributed onto digital platforms. Popular websites such as the iTunes store, YouTube etc have evolved into platforms for film distribution. This allows people to ‘buy’ films online, and not in the physical sense. “Streaming” media allows you to listen to music or watch videos live and online. Websites such as LoveFilm, Netflix and Hulu allow people to pay to watch unlimited films; this again links to the lack of cinema goers in recent years
6
~Audience… The internet is used by the majority of people for business, leisure or information. Because of it’s everyday use, people are happier to download the film and watch it on their electronic device due to easy-access. The internet allows users to browse films with ease However ‘pirating’ has become more popular, and people are able to watch TV programmes and films for free. –Expand on piracy and ompact on industry Ticket prices going up 3D can’t be experienced at home
7
Synergy Horizontal synergy is used in the distribution of films because of the number of platforms are run by numerous companies Films are distributed onto other platforms; for example dvds, Blu-Ray etc In cinema, advertisements and theatrical trailers are shown before the film Non-theatrical release is experienced on certain Airlines, who allow passengers to watch particular films on their journey. When DVDs are released, a distributor may maintain contact with wholesalers who sell and ship DVDs to retail outlets as well as online stores, and arrange for them to carry the DVD.
