Practical Examples Synchronisation Pitfalls Keith Merrington APP01
2
Synchronisation - definition
To cause two files at different locations to match exactly To cause two directories contents at different locations to match exactly
3
Synchronisation – what, what not
Copying only files that have changed by replacing older files with newer files Don’t copy files that are identical Removing files that have been deleted
4
Possible pitfall – modification date
Newer is relative and based on the last modification date and time stamp of a file. If files are on different computers then “newer” may not always be true Solution. Make sure that all computers clock’s are synchronized via Internet or the local server.
5
Synchronisation – what, what not
Don’t copy files that are identical How to determine Modification Date or MD5 Minimize network traffic, optimize performance By saving MD5 with file as an EA and only generate when necessary
6
Synchronisation – what, what not
Remove files that have been deleted How to determine Keep list of files present at last sync At both locations!
7
What if something goes wrong
If a file is overwritten that should not have been overwritten. If a file is deleted that should not have been deleted . Solution Save each file before it is overwritten or deleted
8
What if something goes wrong
Make sure that the file that is deleted/overwritten is available at the original location and can be restored locally. Solution Use a special location to do this. The VAULT
9
Synchronisation Is true synchronization what we really want. or What don’t we want synchronized or should not be synchronized
10
What shouldn’t be synchronized
Command or batch files which refer to different locations Ini files which contain global information which is specific to their location Solution Remove files from synchronization
11
Use a graphical interface
Make things visible Solution Use a graphical interface Allow interactive synchronization to check whats happening Provide visible indication of what will be synchronized.
12
EasySync Program Provides synchronization between two locations with a graphical interface. Number of files limited only by available memory Allows either interactive or batch operation Supports NetDrive™ for OS/2 Provides logging of all actions Provides multi-level recovery of files Support for both individual script files and script file lists Multi-lingual support (Danish, Dutch, English, French,German,Italian,Spanish andSwedish, WPI installation
