2 Professor Emory I am American. I love festivals and celebrations!
My favorite festival is Halloween. I speak some Korean. 한국어초금말해요. My favorite Korean festival is the bullfighting festival in Cheong-do.

3 I will help you with vocabulary!
Important! Sometimes I talk fast or use difficult words. Sometimes my handouts have words you do not know. If you do not know a word, ASK ME. I will help you with vocabulary!

6 Attendance You MUST be on time.
If you are absent 10 or more times you will get an F. If you are absent, your homework is still due by class time. I do not take late homework.

7 Class Rules Try to speak English as much as possible. Participation is very important! Turn off your cell phone! Come prepared (materials, pen, notebook and homework) or I will send you home. Do not speak when others are talking – listen to your classmates.

8 Engrade.com All homework assignments will be posted on engrade.
All power points will be posted on engrade. Every handout will be posted on engrade. If you lose something, you must go to engrade and get a new copy. I will give you logins for engrade next week. You can see your grades on engrade and you can ask me questions.

11 Presentations We will learn how to give good presentations in this class. We will learn how to make interesting .ppts for your presentation. We will practice simple speaking activities. We will learn about famous and exciting festivals in Korea and in other countries.

12 Homework Part of your homework will be learning about festivals.
Part of your homework might be to make a video to use in your presentation. (maybe) We will learn about different customs and foods.

13 Participation In class, you will often work with your presentation group to organize information about your presentations. In class, you will evaluate other presentations as you watch them. (This is actually very easy). Please participate so that class can be useful and fun!

14 Midterm and Final Grades
For your midterm, you will give a short group presentation about a Korean festival. For your final, you will give a short group presentation about an international festival.

15 Today Today, I want to get an idea of what you know and your English levels. This will help me prepare for our regular class starting next week. If class is too hard today, don't panic! Today I am learning about you.

Brainstorming Brainstorming – is when you come up with a list of ideas, words, or phrases about one topic. It can be messy and fun. Write down any words or ideas that you think of. Later, you can pick the words you like best.

20 What is a festival? Festival – 제전, 축일, 잔치
A holiday, celebration, or carnival. A celebration where people can be merry (happy) Holiday – 휴일, 휴가 A day of celebration, (usually when one does not work). Holidays often have religious backgrounds.

21 Make a list of festivals or holidays that are Korean.
Get into groups Make two lists. Make a list of festivals or holidays that are Korean. Make a list of festivals or holidays from other countries. If you can, say where it is celebrated.

22 Pick ONE Pick one festival from your Korean list and write a list of words about it. Pick one festival from your International list and write a list of words about it.
