Exams and Make-Ups: Excuses that fall under the make-up policy
Death/funeral of close family member. Serious illness of close family member, requiring hospitalization. Illness to self. Important ritual involving self or close family member. Serious auto accident involving injury or trauma. Court appearance.
7
Excuses that are acceptable, but will only defer taking the test during the specific period in question. Child care crisis. Non-injury accident. Dead battery or flat tire in auto. Other transportation crises (missed bus, friend did not show). In these cases the exam must be taken either later during the scheduled day, or the very next day before the next class meeting.
8
Excuses that are not acceptable
Caring for a relative with a chronic condition (e.g. diabetes). Emergencies involving boyfriends or girlfriends. Family vacations or destination rituals. Routine doctor’s or dentist’s appointments. Illnesses or rituals involving distant relatives, boyfriend’s relatives, etc.
9
Excuses that are valid, but will usually result in a student failing the class.
Relatives’ funeral in a foreign country. Extended illness. Chronic and profound psychological condition. Marital break-up.

Standing Advise for Class Success
Attend class. Every time you miss class, expect your grade on the next test to be diminished by a least one grade level. You may also not be able to complete an assignment due to missing a vital background lecture. Attempt all take-home assignments. These are your opportunities for easy points. If you don’t understand an assignment, get help! The intention of the assignments is to make sure that you comprehend important basic concepts.
