Muscles Types & Muscle Fibers
WEIGHT TRAINING Muscles Types & Muscle Fibers
2
Muscle Types You have 3 Types of Muscles: Smooth Cardiac Skeletal
3
Smooth Muscle Makes up the walls of internal organs such as the stomach and blood vessels Classified as an involuntary muscle because you cannot consciously control their movements
4
Cardiac Muscle Your heart is made of cardiac muscle.
Classified as an involuntary muscle because you cannot consciously control your heart beating.
5
Skeletal Muscle Are attached to the bones and make movement possible.
These are the muscles you used for movement Classified as voluntary muscles because you control them.
6
Types of Muscle Fibers Muscle fibers are muscle cells, which are long, thin, and cylinder-shaped There are 3 types of muscle fibers: Slow-Twitch Fast-Twitch Intermediate-Twitch
7
Slow-Twitch Fibers Contract at a slow rate
These fibers have good endurance and are involved in cardiovascular activities. Aerobic Exercises Long distance runners, biking
8
Fast-Twitch Fibers Muscle contracts fast
Muscle fibers you use for strength activities Anaerobic Exercises Power lifting, sprinters, agility drills
9
Intermediate-Twitch Fibers
Have the characteristics of both slow- and fast-twitch fibers They contract fast and have good endurance You can use them for activities that involve both strength and cardiovascular fitness Athletic Competition
10
The types of fibers that your muscles are made of are determined by your genes, and those genes are hereditary. You can not change the fiber types. You can increase the strength and endurance of your muscles by proper training
11
Movement of Muscle Concentric Movement: Eccentric Movement:
The contraction or shortening of the muscle. Muscle is being strengthened, the hard stage of the lift. Eccentric Movement: The lengthening of the muscle, the lighter stage of the lift.
