2 What are Muscles? Muscles are the main organs of the system
Composed of Muscle Fibers Long and thin cells Myofibrils allow for muscles to contract

3 MUSCLES There are over 600 muscles in the body. All muscles contract
There are 3 kinds of muscles

4 Three Kinds of Muscle

5 SKELETAL MUSCLES Connects to bones… causes them to move
Voluntary muscles You make them move These muscles react quickly and tire quickly They work in pairs

6 Tendon vs. Ligament

7 Movement When your muscle contracts (shortens) it pulls on the tendon, which pulls on your bone and they move together

8 The biceps are the flexor
The triceps are the extensor

9 SMOOTH MUSCLE Does not have bands
They contract without you thinking about it involuntary muscle Controls breathing, blood pressure, and digestion Reacts slowly and tires slowly

10 CARDIAC MUSCLE 1. Only found in the heart 2. Involuntary
3. Do not tire out 4. Produce their own signal

Use it or lose it! Resistance Exercising strengthens Skeletal Muscle Use of Weights and bands Aerobic Exercise Strengthens the Heart Any activity that causes your heart rate to increase Always warm-up and stretch
