5. Evaluation Methodology
Protected areas cover 11 per cent of the world’s land surface 1 per cent of the world’s oceans.
IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas, TNC, UNEP-WCMC, UNESCO, CBD, GEF develop appropriate tools
In the Caribbean region, hard coral cover declined by 80%. 35% of mangroves have been lost in just 20 years.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands ( has adopted a target for 250 million hectares of wetlands to be well managed in designated sites

10. Evaluation Methodology
Convention on Biological Diversity has adopted a target of 275 million hectares of inland waters habitats to be conserved in protected areas by
CBD Conference of the Parties in 2004, 188 member countries agreed to develop assessment systems and report on the effectiveness of 30 per cent of their protected areas by 2010.
