Example Introductory Paragraph
Guilt and shame are often functions of one’s environment. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter takes place in a precarious time. Puritan values, communal life, and personal guilt all combine to form the moral climate of the novel. While Hester Prynne’s famous symbol becomes the target of scorn and slander, it is her persecutors who degrade themselves through their judgement. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter to reveal the hypocrisy of theocratic officials, generate sympathy for passionate, impulsive behavior, and to convey the ideals of American Romanticism.

Body Paragraphs 3-7: Identify evidence in the book that show the author’s attitude or desire to accomplish a specific goal. These lines reveal the author’s purpose. Conclusion: Summarizes body paragraphs, but does not simply repeat thesis.

Ways to Earn an F Not address the prompt, merely summarizing the author’s life instead. Your paper does not pass the originality checker. You fail to cite any sources in a research paper. Not knowing how to count on an assignment that is a minimum of 3.5 pages. Your bibliography does not count as a page. This may not guarantee an F, but using ludicrous fonts, narrowing your margins, and citing Wikipedia will not help your cause.
