Mission & Vision Statements
Mission: The mission of the Rice University Student Association Diversity & Inclusion Committee is two-pronged: 1) to bring awareness to diversity and inclusion issues on campus and 2) to provide initiatives and a framework to aid the University in creating a more inclusive community. More specifically, the committee aims to approach diversity and inclusion topics across a wide spectrum, ranging from but not limited to: class, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Vision: The vision of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee is to help create a Rice where all students feel included, reflected, and respected in the community.

Low Income Student Accessibility Efforts
Goals: Ensure each college is initiating conversations about inclusion and accessibility of all students to college social life Help colleges implement a sustainable low-income accessibility program for college activities Long term: continue discussions with Provost’s Office, SSI, etc. to examine issues experienced by low- income/first-gen students at Rice and conduct some of the groundwork to ensure these programs best reflect student desires and needs Best Practices for Implementation at Each College Create a guide of best practices for colleges that outlines specific activities/events that could be funded, ideas for implementation/disclosure of the program, etc. Create a survey to investigate specific questions posed by Provost’s Office and SSI concerning low-income/first-gen students’ experiences at Rice
15
Wellbeing Programming for Diverse Students
Goal: To establish a program for mental health concerns pertaining to low-income, first-gen, and racially diverse students. Wellbeing center→ direct students to other resources Student Success Initiative & Rice Emerging Scholars Program New program→ mental health/wellbeing support for students (all undergrads) Self-care workshops and days Surveys being sent out The goal is for students to be able to talk about the stress they have because of their situation. As of now the wellbeing center doesn’t have program in place→ direct students to other areas (SSI and RESP) Problem, RESP→ STEM majors SSI students don’t come → freshmen Some students don’t come in to get help until later New program is opened to all students helping students to cope/ how to deal with the stress because of their race and economic/educational background Surveys being sent out to different cultural clubs and to programs of SSI to get an idea of the what stress/ problems pertaining to theses students are present in greater amount so that we get an idea of what are the main concerns that the program should deal with

“How to be an Ally” Training
Collaborating with University-wide “Committee on Diversity and Inclusion” and The Center for the Healing of Racism’s Executive Director, Cherry Steinwender, on developing programming for a more general ally training not limited to LGBT student. Separate from current Ally training in order to not conflate the two, but perhaps some overlapping material. For faculty, staff, and students. Once trained, individuals will then implement training at Rice. Pilot group with be faculty/staff geared and then adjusted for students. Topics to include: “Ally Building”, “Unaware Racism”, “Cultural Racism”, and “Oneness of Humanity”
17
Remaining Goals and Visions
Develop a plan to better integrate and utilize Diversity Facilitators at each of the colleges. Perhaps a more permanent and centralized group at each college like the PAAs, RHAs, and other similar programs. Could potentially be different than O-Week Diversity Facilitators depending on structure, implementation, and interest.
