The Society was formed in 1970, its purpose is to promote and expand the knowledge of Warminster and the surrounding villages. There is a large collection of data if you wish to conduct your own research, the museum staff are on hand to help with questions of historical buildings, trades occupations as well as the people of the town as they will have quite extensive knowledge Menu

3 You will find our town situated in South west Wiltshire which is almost exactly halfway between Salisbury and Bath the town had once been dubbed as the most drunken town but was not even justified. Warminster is a market town which was built well before the Norman conquest there was major changes in the agricultural practises which had brought more trade to Warminster's corn market. Today Warminster is best known as a garrison town as it is near Salisbury plain and with brilliant road and rail links is was a good choice for a large barracks at the edge of town Menu

4 There were many casualties during the war more than that were recorded on the town and village memorials, the present number at current in the book of remembrance exceeds 490, it has been suggested that there were many more, the history society has received much information from the local people who have managed to supply names of the victims and to give background information which has been included in the book of remembrance it is still an ongoing project also the society members are always ready to honour all of the local casualties who were previously unknown to them. 5 John Wallis Titt was a late 19th century English mechanical engineer he worked on steam engines he did work on a post mill with his father until 1865, he made elevators, and established himself as an agricultural engineer. Edwin Sloper Beaven was a maltster he is also a member of the Morgan family he did put himself and the maltings family on the worlds map, he is a self taught plant breeder and successfully breed the genetically true variety of barley Menu

6 The History society has different events on so that those who do come and visit Warminster are able to learn about the history of the town and the surrounding area each event is on a selected day each month and that there is a small fee for visitors to pay when they go to each event. Menu
