PREVENTION, SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS RESOURCES Not an expert, recognize others in attendance from community (Marth Graf, executive director of western colorado suicide prevention foundation, Jenn Daniels (WCSPF and NAMI chapter director). that are a part of national and local chapters/foundations for suicide awareness and prevention. Not spending a lot of time reporting data and groups today. We know it is a problem among many age groups, genders, ethnicities, leading cause of death of youth Leading cause of death among teens in Colorado Rates continue to climb (rank 7th nationally for suicide rates) GLBTQ community at 2-3X increased risk for MH problems 25% of Suicide Completers have been in the ED the month prior 45% have Seen their PCP in the month prior 30% are in treatment with a MHP American Foundation of Suicide Prevention

3 Risk Factors Characteristics/conditions
No Single Cause (Stress/Coping) Data & Prevalence Health Factors: Mental Health Conditions, Substance Abuse Disorders, Serious or chronic health conditions and/or pain. 4 Signs and Symptoms: Warning Signs
Talk: Being a burden, feeling trapped, unbearable pain, no reason to live, killing themselves Behavior: Increased use of alcohol and/or drugs, Looking for ways to kill themselves, Acting recklessly, withdrawing/isolating, sleep disruption, saying “good-bye,” giving away prized possessions, aggression. Change in behavior or new behavior after event Mood: Depression, anhedonia (decreased interest/pleasure in things), rage/irritability, anxiety Most people who take their lives exhibit one or more of the warning signs, either through what they say or what they do.

Know the 5 Signs: Not feeling like yourself Feeling agitated Feeling withdrawn Caring for yourself (difficulty) Feeling hopeless We all have mental health, need early detection and prevention. Being willing to notice and talk to the person early and provide support and resources can make a difference.

SMFMR Residents, Behavioral Team (Education & Support)

Part of the Crisis Response Task Force Committee lead by Sister Barbara that has brought a multidisciplinary team together to look at how we are addressing issues that come up among our patients, staff, and associates. All of our residents can be a resource/support to this effort. Community teams and resources, will address these in last slide. Acknowledge those from community here today who are invested in this topic and are providing support, training, and interventions throughout our county and the western slope.
