Created by Tom Burns and GM Stalker in the late 1950’s
Group leadership
Succeeds on power of personalities and relationships
Used to give members incentive to cooperate and perform at the best they possibly can

The group controls the work environment instead of one person
Reacts quickly to change
Most flexible and easy to change

Requires constant cooperation and modification from all members

6. Matrix Organisational Structure
Divided authority between Project Manager and Functional Manager
Each member reports to both managers
Members are put into teams to complete work or tasks
Allows members to more freely share information
Increases extent of knowledge

7. Advantages Creates more of a horizontal structure
Allows a quicker spread of information across all boundaries
Increases individual knowledge
Gives members a chance to be chosen for their skills according to project needs

Differentiation between Functional Manager and Project Manager confuses team members
Higher ratio of managers to employees which can create opposing loyalties from employees
