Relationship of Down syndrome to maternal age. The frequency of Down syndrome rises exponentially with increasing maternal age. The frequency at amniocentesis (blue symbols) is slightly higher than in live-born infants (black symbols) because miscarriages are more likely in fetuses with Down syndrome.
