Types Of Energy D. Crowley, 2008
2
Sunday, August 26, 2018 Types Of Energy To know all types of energy
3
Energy Look at the following pictures - what can we say about the energy in each example: - Where do you think the energy comes from? What type of energy is being used? Vibrating drum & plucked guitar string: - Energy is transferred from you, as you hit the drum or pluck the string The energy is transferred to the surroundings as sound energy
4
Energy A battery & light bulb: -
Energy is stored chemically, and is transferred as electrical energy. Electrical energy is transferred to the surroundings as light and thermal (heat) energy via the bulb Rock on a mountain: - The rock has stored energy because of its position above the ground and the pull of gravity (gravitational potential energy). If the rock fell, this gravitational potential energy would be transferred as kinetic energy
5
Energy Hot tea: - Hot tea has heat energy in the form of kinetic energy (moving particles). Some energy is transferred to cold milk when it is poured in, lowering the tea’s temperature Explosives: - Energy is stored chemically, and when detonated this is transferred to the surroundings as thermal energy, sound energy and kinetic energy
6
Energy Energy is the ability to ‘do some work’ - everything that happens needs energy (e.g. heating; cooking; lighting; movement of vehicles; and keeping us alive)! Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from place to place in a variety of ways
7
Types Of Energy Electrical energy - a current in a circuit etc…
Light energy - from the sun; a light bulb etc… Sound energy - from a loudspeaker; a drum etc… Kinetic (movement) energy - anything which moves! Nuclear energy - transferred during a nuclear reaction Thermal (heat) energy - transferred from hot objects to colder ones Radiant heat (infra red) energy - transferred as electromagnetic radiation by hot objects Gravitational potential energy - possessed by anything with the ability to fall Elastic potential energy - stretched springs; elastic and rubber bands etc… Chemical energy - possessed by food; fuels; batteries etc…
8
Energy Superhero Your task is to create a super-hero which displays all the types of energy there are… E.g. Mr. Energy has elastic potential energy in his spring legs; chemical energy in his battery pack; and nuclear energy via his nuclear booster pack etc… When you create your superhero you must explain where each of the energy types are found on them…
