1 Bell Work - ALL Activator
Jane and Paul were practicing for a math competition. Their teacher gave them both the following expression to simplify: (a2+5a–4) – (2a2+4a+3) Paul finished first with an answer of -a2+a–7. When Jane finished she eagerly stated, “No, Paul you are wrong. The answer is -a2+9a–1. Who is correct? Identify the error for the incorrect student. Explain the steps needed to correct the error. This should be a few sentences. (3a+4ab+3b) – (2b+5a+8ab)

4 Standard MGSE9-12.A.APR.1 Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials; understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers in that they are closed under these operations.

5 Learning Target I can multiply a binomial by a polynomial, including trinomials, to simplify algebraic expressions.

6 I Do – The Distributive Property
(6x + 5)(2x2 – 3x – 5)

7 I Do – Another way to look at it!
(6x + 5)(2x2 – 3x – 5)

8 I Do – Example (3x – 5)(2x2 +7x – 8)

9 WE DO – Examples (2a – 9)(3a2 + 4a – 4) (4y2 – 3)(4y2 + 7y + 2)
CHALLENGE: (m2 – 5m + 4)(m2 + 7m – 3)
