3
Elements Substance Objects
ALL THE OBJECTS IN THIS NATURE IS MADE UP OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUBSTANCE AND THESE SUBSTANCES ARE FORMED FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF ELEMETS Elements Substance Objects
4
Are there any metals in this list .?
HYDROGEN IRON GOLD POTASSIUM
5
Are there any metals in this list .?
HYDROGEN IRON GOLD POTASSIUM
6
Most of the elements in the periodic table are Metals
7
Physical state Most of the Metals exist as solid at room temperature , except Mercury (Hg) , Gallium (Ga) and cesium (Cs) Mercury Gallium
8
GENERAL PROPERTIES OF METALS
METALS ARE MALLEABLE Metals can be beaten into thin sheets by hammering , this property is known as “MALLEABILITY” Eg: Gold is the most malleable metal A solid gold sheet can be made into an ornament. Aluminum foil. Iron e.t.c
9
2. METALS ARE DUCTILE Metals can be drawn into thin fine wires. This property is known as “DUCTILITY” Eg: platinum is the most ductile metal aluminium , copper , tungsten
11
3. METALS ARE HARD All metals are hard except sodium and potassium, which are soft and can be cut with a knife. Hard metals * Soft metals
12
4. METALS HAVE METALLIC LUSTRE
Metals have the quality of reflecting light from its surface and can be polished (poses a shining appearance) Eg: gold , aluminium , copper
13
5. METALS ARE GOOD CONDUCTORS OF HEAT
Metals have the ability to conduct heat , that is ,metals are “THERMAL CONDUCTORS” Eg: Silver is the best thermal conductor among metals Aluminium, copper e.t.c poses comparatively high high thermal conductivity. Lead is the poorest conductor of heat
14
6. METALS ARE GOOD CONDUCTORS OF ELECTRICITY
That is ,they have the ability to let electricity pass through , it is known as electrical conductivity. Thus metals are “ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS”. Eg: silver is the best electrical conductor among metals . Copper- electrical wire that is used in our house Aluminium- electrical wire that is used in electrical post
15
7. METALS ARE SONOROUS That is, they have a unique ringing sound if you strike them with something hard. This property of the metals is known as “SONORITY”
16
8. METALS HAVE HIGH DENSITY
Metals have high density and are very heavy. Ies, Atoms are tightly packed, and this makes them very tough. Iridium and osmium have the highest densities where as , lithium has the lowest density. Iridium Lithium
17
9. METALS HAVE HIGH MELTING POINT & HIGH BOILING POINT
Most metals have high melting and boiling points because in metals there is a very strong intermolecular force of attraction and it needs a lot of energy to melt or to boil Tungsten (high BP) Rhenium (high MP)
