GIFTED GAZETTE 1.8 Oct. 2nd - Oct. 5th What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor This week we will… Read chapters 1-4 Complete character maps of Marty and Judd Explain the differences in character’s points of view Skill: make predictions backed by text evidence Language/Writing: This week we will… learn and apply spelling rules for irregular nouns complete a “types of nouns scavenger hunt” use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills. introduce opinion writing. WE ARE TEACHING THE STUDENTS TO USE THE ACRONYM “OREO” AS A STRATEGY TO WRITE OPINION ESSAYS (Opinion, Reason, Explain, restate Opinion) AND WOULD APPRECIATE DONATIONS OF OREO COOKIES THIS WEEK-MULTIPLE FLAVORS WOULD BE APPRECIATED, SO THAT WE CAN WRITE TO PERSUADE OUR AUDIENCE WHICH FLAVOR we think is THE BEST! Spelling: NONE (due to shortened week) Math: This week we will… Complete an in-class project applying our understanding of place value concepts master 7’s facts with “Fluency Friday”. We will try to make up as many retakes this week. Project of the Week (P.O.W.): Fall themed POW is due THURSDAY. ALL incomplete POW’s are due this Thursday! Research: We will begin researching dog breeds, animal care, and animal rights. We will use our findings to make connections between realistic fiction (Shiloh) and non-fiction literature on the same topic. On-Level Spelling: No spelling this week due to shortened week- no school on Friday 10/6 (Parish Fair Holiday) Classical Roots Vocab.: Lesson 8 Review pages 34-36 THURSDAY Test Schedule: Reading: Reading comprehension test with making predictions Vocabulary: Lesson 8 review test (multiple choice only) Language: irregular plural nouns and mentor sentence skills Spelling: none Math: Graded in-class place value project Fluency Friday Test for 6’s Final Challenge Math assessment will be this week for the 1st 9 weeks. A note from the teachers We were SO PROUD of our classes during their Greek presentations on Friday! They shared their knowledge and passion for mythology with others in awesome Greek style. Thank you so much for your dedication and support for our kids! We could not have provided such a great learning experience without parents like you. Please start reading a fiction book for our next reading project: t-shirt book report due October 20th. Details and expectations to go home later this week! Friday 10/6 Parish Fair Holiday/no school Friday 10/13 No school for students/Teacher record’s day Please continue to study multiplication facts nightly!
