Lead and You Adams HS November 2017
2
Long-Term Effects of Lead
Chemically, lead behaves like calcium. Where is calcium found in the body? Unlike calcium, lead damages neurons. In high concentrations, lead is poisonous In low concentrations, lead causes: Why are younger children at the most risk from lead? Behavioral issues like ADD Learning problems Slow growth and development Hearing and speech problems Calcium is found in bones and teeth—also important in nerve cells (neurons) The bodies of young children absorb calcium (and lead) because they are still developing their bones, teeth, and nervous system (brain)
3
How does lead exposure occur?
Ingestion Inhalation Main sources of lead Leaded paint & gasoline Soil Dust Water In South Bend, the water has been tested regularly and it does not have dangerous amounts of lead.
4
Prevention is key! What can we do?
We can live safely with lead. First we need to know if lead is present – then we can work to prevent exposure.
5
Lead test kit What’s inside the kit?

Good Locations to Test Dust Sampling Fan blade Top of a door frame
Inside a vent Long forgotten shelf in back of a closet Preferable locations are window wells, and any particularly dusty surfaces (i.e. a fan blade, top of a door frame, inside a vent, a long forgotten shelf in the back of a closet…). Put on gloves, if desired, and remove the dust wipe from bag and packaging. Run the dust wipe over desired surface and try to collect as much dust as possible, don’t be afraid to press firmly. The dust wipe should look brown or black. Fold the dust wipe and place it back into the labeled plastic bag it came in. Record information about where the dust was collected in the house. a What kind of surface (window well, door frame, vent, etc…)? What room of the house? Repeat until all the dust samples are collected.

Soil Sampling Good spots to test:
look for exposed soil (not covered with mulch or grass) Near exterior wall of house Garden Play area Gather approximately a tablespoon of soil from the surface. Record information about where the sample was collected in the yard. a. Was it along the edge of the house? In the middle of the yard? Next to the road? Repeat until all the soil samples are collected.

Paint chip sampling Find paint that is in bad condition—peeling or powdery If no paint comes off on the sticky tape, it is probably not a lead hazard.

What’s Next? Bring back permission slip, samples, and data sheet
In February, the results will be returned with information about what you can do if there is lead in your home Bring back permission slip, samples, and data sheet Adams Chemistry students and UND students will test all the samples using an X-Ray Fluorimeter We use the data to make South Bend a safer community!
