“The Story of a Scar” We are going to look at this from these perspectives: Gender criticism The socio-economic aspect of the story How this story can function as a dramatic monologue What do we learn about the narrator (the man) and the “speaker” (the unnamed woman)?

HOMEWORK Read all three poems carefully.
For the Emily Dickinson poem, just write a short paragraph telling us what you think the poem is about. For the other two poems, identify what you think is the principal difference between the two poems and why you think so.

Featured Author— James Alan McPherson
Won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1978 for his short story collection, Elbow Room. Was the first African American to win that award. Gwendolyn Brooks was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1950. Is a permanent faculty member of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa. Has earned both the Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships.
