Please get out a pencil/pen your notebook, folder, and any signed forms. Before class begins write down what the focus of our work time today is as well as your homework. Warm Up: Explain the motivations for ENGISH, FRENCH, and SPANISH exploration. How did their motivations impact the relationships they established with native people? WT: 1. Packet 2. Review Notes Closure: History in #s (hashtags) Create an Instagram post with a picture and hashtag (#) to explain a critical event that we learned about this week. Explain your post and # choice in 3-5 sentences including evidentiary support about your event and its importance HW: Study notes to be prepared for the Native Americans + Explorers TEST on Friday I will be able to: I will be able to explain the colonial period in Georgia and specifically explain the impact of James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Mary Musgraves, the charter of 1732 and the settlement of Savannah to the states development. EQ: How did early European contact affect the culture of the Mississippian Indians? (H1b) With what European countries and/or individuals did the Mississippian Culture come in contact? How did this contact affect the Mississippian Culture? (H1b What prompted the European countries to explore, compete, claim, and settle the Southeastern part of the United States? If you moved to Saudi Arabia, how would it affect your life? Ever wonder who invented chocolate and where it comes from? E. Q. What role did Mary Musgrove play in influencing the societies of Yamacraw Indians and English colonists?

Governance The student will understand that as a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of government also increases. Think back to when you were in elementary school. How are the rules more complex in middle school? EQ: Tomochichi and James Oglethorpe were leaders of different societies. Do you think Indians and colonists had to adapt to one another’s rules and government?

Colonial Power Players in North America Georgia becomes a colony
Great Britain (England) Spain France Who laid claim to America? Students could Map these territories What is the significance to the light blue region? It was unclear who controlled this region. Countries laid claim to it, but in reality Native Americans still ruled here. Traders and trappers moved in and out this was the wild frontier. For GA and the other colonies it was a defensive liability.

The 1st European settlements in Georgia were Spanish Missions along the coast and barrier islands.
After the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, Great Britain began to claim a larger share of North America. Have students Map GA’s Spanish settlements. Use GA map from text simply enlarge the coastal region. Students should include barrier island names, rivers, Spanish territories and create their own key.

Fort King George Great Britain claimed Georgia in 1663, but did not plan to settle there until 1717 There were many different proposals about how to settle Georgia. Some envisioned a colony of riches (Robert Montgomery) Others saw Georgia as a new beginning for England’s poor.
