1 The Monroe Doctrine: The Policy of the United states
By Reid Kirkland

2 Objective The student will be able to explain what the Monroe Doctrine was trying to protect. Answer: it was trying to protect the Latin American countries from being colonized by Europe.

3 Questions What would be your reaction if you heard on the evening news that a European country had placed nuclear missiles of the American coast? What is a Doctrine? What do you think the Monroe Doctrine might be?

4 Policy of Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine basically said that if European countries stay out of our business we would stay out of theirs.

5 First policy The western hemisphere was not to be further colonized by European countries What it was saying was if try to you colonize our country we are going to fight back

6 Second policy The U.S. would not interfere with existing European countries or become involved with the internal concerns of European countries regarding Latin America Basically the U.S. won’t start anything unless they try to start something

7 Effects of the Monroe Doctrine
It protected Latin America from being colonized It caused Latin American countries to resent the U.S. for “taking care” of them It was enforced by the British navy, not the U.S. navy, until the 1880’s

8 First effect It helped protect Latin America from being colonized by the Spanish empire It also kept France and Spain and others powers out However, Britain remained the dominant trade power

9 Second effect Latin America nations resented the U.S. for “taking care” of them. They were pretty much saying they could take care of themselves

10 Third effect British navy not the U.S. navy enforced the doctrine until the 1880’s British navy enforced it because they thought it was necessary to have it

11 Criticisms of the Monroe Doctrine
The U.S. was telling the rest of the world what to do The U.S. wasn’t really interested in helping Latin America

12 First criticism The practice of the Monroe Doctrine functioned as a Declaration of Hegemony and a right to unilateral intervention over the western hemisphere The Monroe Doctrine was like the U.S. telling the rest of the world what to do

13 Second criticism Controlling Latin Americas public movements are Monroe’s true objectives Critics did not believe that the stated goals were the real goals

14 Conclusion Relation to theme is they are facing a challenge with other countries and the way they solved was if you do something to and other country the United States will take it as aggression and will start war and that is what the Monroe Doctrine was stating
