Words to Know Civil Liberties: the state of being subject only to laws established for the good of the community, especially with regard to freedom of action and speech Civil Rights: the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality Civic Responsibility: It is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. Civic Participation: ways in which citizens participate in the life of a community in order to improve conditions for others or to help shape the community's future

What is a Citizen and how are you a U.S. Citizen?
Citizen: a legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized To become a citizen at birth, you must: Have been born in the United States or certain territories or outlying possessions of the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction of the United States; OR had a parent or parents who were citizens at the time of your birth (if you were born abroad) and meet other requirements To become a citizen after birth, you must: Apply for “derived” or “acquired” citizenship through parents Apply for naturalization
