An allusion is a brief reference within a work to something outside the work. The Crucible uses many Biblical allusions. As we read Act II, pay attention to any Biblical allusions that are used. Allusion 1 “…and where she walks the crowd will part like the sea for Israel. Allusion 2 “Man, remember, until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in Heaven.” Allusion 3 “”Pontius Pilate! God will not let you wash your hands of this!” What do these allusions mean? (What is being compared)? #1: Abigail is being compared to Moses AND the sea is being compared to the crowd #2: Rebecca Nurse is being compared to Lucifer #3: Procter is calling Rev. Hale Pontius Pilate. What is their value to the text?
