Simplifying fractions
A fraction is considered to be in simplest form, or lowest terms, if its numerator and denominator have no common whole number factor other than First: find the GCF of 8 and 36 Second: divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF
3
12 21 What is the GCF? Divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF
4
Mixed Numbers A mixed number is the sum of a whole number and a fraction. It is good to use a mixed number when there is an improper fraction. An improper fraction is a fraction whose numerator is larger than its denominator.
5
To change an improper fraction to a mixed number:
Divide the numerator by the denominator. Write the whole number as the whole number for your answer and the remainder as the numerator of the fraction with the denominator the same as that in the original improper fraction. Ex: 9 4
6
To change a mixed number to an improper fraction:
Multiply the denominator of the fraction times the whole number Add the whole number to the numerator of the fraction in the original mixed number. This is the now the numerator of the improper fraction. Write the new numerator over the denominator of the original fraction in the mixed number. Ex: 3 1 5
