Keur Soce Health and Demographic Surveillance Site System in Senegal : Site Description, Baseline Findings and Implications M. Ndiath, JF Gomis, R. Tine, A. Gueye, JL. Ndiaye, B. Cisse, B. Faye, O. Gaye University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar Senegal N°294 Introduction In Senegal, despite the 3 sites operating (Niakhar, Mlomp, and Bandafassi DSS) there is an acute need for empirical evidence to guide further research and to direct health interventions. As reliable data is in short supply and is often based on indirect estimates or geographically limited to urban. The Parasitology department had developed a registration area suitable for assessment of the effectiveness, safety, and acceptability of malaria control interventions and to target other tropical disease. It aims also to set up a geographic area for monitoring population changes through Keur Soce site. Objectives To present baseline results from first phase Demographic and Health Surveillance in Keur Soce Subdistrict, Senegal. To compare results with national and international data and comment on their relevance to health development Methods Study Area: Keur Soce is located in rural areas in the region of Kaolack, in the district of Ndiedieng. The area lies between longitudes 16°00’14.8’’and 16°07’13’’W and latitudes 13°51’53’’ and 14°00’00’’N. It is located at 230 km from Dakar in the Sudano-Sahelian region of Senegal and covers an area of 478 sq. km. The estimated population is inhabitants and composed mostly of Wolof (90%) and lives mainly on agriculture and livestock. This population is distributed in 73 villages with an average density of 62.7 inhabitants / km ². Almost all of the area is not electrified, running water (from deep wells) is available in just over half of the area, otherwise the water comes from traditional wells. The climate is characterized by the alternation of a long and dry season from November to June and a short rainy season from July to October. The area has a 2 health post and 09 functional health huts . Figure 1: Localization of Keur Soce Initial census: 74 villages covered 1335 Compounds 2851 Households 29000 inhabitants Regular updates: All vital demographic events occurring within the study area are updated through regular visits to each households. Field supervision and Quality control: 3 levels of quality control. Results Figure 2: Keur Soce Population Pyramid,2011 Table 1: demographic indicators Mortality rates by age and sex: Figure 3: Mortality rates by age and sex Fertility rates in KSHDSS Table 2: Fertility rates in KSHDSS Discussion The findings show a very young population with population densities varying from one village to another. The sex ratio is favorable to men in all age groups except those of women of reproductive age. more than 50% of of the total population are not married. An interpretation of the dependency ratio shows a small proportion of the working population (age group years). The main activities of the people are agriculture and livestock. The results are in accordance with current results at national level and implied a number of studies to be conducted in keur soce. Characterization of epidemiological profile of the site. A focus on malaria hotspots in context of malaria elimination.
