What is Virtual Reality?
Virtual Reality is a term used to describe a three-dimensional computer generated environment in which the user is immersed within the environment and is able to complete tasks and manipulate various objects.

What is Virtual Reality Used For?
Virtual Reality is used for several different applications that include… Therapy Forensics Aeronautics Military Education Gaming Entertainment

So How Does This All Actually Work(Oculus Rift)?
1) Head Tracking - Oculus Rift uses VR headset that uses 6 Dof(6 degrees of freedom) which plots your head on a grid that measures your movements in terms of x,y,z. Oculus obtains this data by plotting 20 sensors around the headset. For vision, these headsets use a stereoscopic display which displays two images at slightly different angles, when viewed together create depth and solidity. Inside the headset is also a 3-d audio system so that you can hear sound in a realistic 3-d environment. 2) Tracking motion - Oculus uses two controllers referred to as Oculus Touch which simulate your hands. With these you are able to interact with the world; grabbing objects, using weapons, etc. These controllers track movements through a matrix of sensors.

How is Virtual Reality achieved?
Systems typically used for VR include headsets, omni-directed treadmills and gloves When these systems are used all at once it creates the illusion that the user is in a different world. This process isn’t easy. Since our brains and senses are so finely in tune, any change in this equilibrium is easy to detect. So, the goal of VR is to get the right combination of hardware, software, and sensory synchronicity. Once these things are achieved, VR reaches a sense of presence where the user is completely immersed in the virtual world.
