3 Real Talk An award is made to the University of Arizona, or Ohio State University, or Northern Arizona University. Who does the award belong to? Who approves releasing (or keeping) the award when the PI leaves? Talk about UA approval, department and college, too. Sponsor approval of arrangement, whether it is moving to a new institution or staying at UA with new P Sponsored Projects Services

4 What usually happens… PI leaves an institution
What might happen with active grants? Keep award at old institution & assign new PI Move balance/award to new institution Subcontract to new or old institution (need to assign a UA PI) May need to relinquish pending proposals May need to transfer equipment Where is the PI going? New Hires should start routing proposals through UA PI works with former institution to coordinate transfers/balances PI works with dept/SPS on required application forms (NIH, NSF, etc) and UAR proposal Sponsored Projects Services

6 Awards FROM the UA Dept/College decide on transfers: If transferring:
Keep at UA & propose new PI Approve transfer to new institution Approve hybrid transfer/subaward to finish work If transferring: Dept/PI determines balance on active accounts to transfer (SPS verifies) Roles/Responsibilities Sponsored Projects Services
