2. Goals
Compare the life and teaching of Muhammad, from the Hadith, to the life and teachings of Judiasm and Christianity.
Use the Qur’an and other sources to explain the 5 pillars of Islam and create a visual to present to the class about 1 of the 5 pillars

3. Essential questions Who was Muhammad and what were his teachings?
What does the Qur’an tell us?
What are some of the beliefs of Muslims?

4. Who was Muhammad? Who: Born to a merchant family at Mecca in 570 AD
What: Had a vision to preach a new religion called Islam
Why important: 2nd largest religion in the world. Very similar to Christianity
As trade increased contact between culture changed the Bedouins. They found new ideas which eventually led to Islam, a new religion. Islam rose in 600s AD by a man/ prophet named Muhammad. He was orphaned by 5 but worked as a caravan leader early in life. He saw many terrible things happening to people around him; thieves, stealing, fighting etc. He had a vision to preach Islam (surrendering).

5. The teachings of Muhammad
Who: Allah (God)
What: only one true God, share wealth, good deeds, prepare for the afterlife.
Why important: Islam and its followers (Muslims) start to spread
Many poor were attached to the message of Muhammad. The wealthy and religious leaders did not like it at the time. Muhammad applied the messages he preached to laws and established an Islamic state, in which all Muslims placed their loyalty. Muhammad formed an army and spread Islam to more places until a new empire was born.

We are going to use a Venn diagram to compare the teachings of Muhammad with the teachings of Christ.

5. Shari’ah are Arabic laws created from the Qur’an
Muslims believe in an all powerful God that created the universe. God also spoke through many prophets such as Abraham, Jesus and Muhammad. The messages from the prophets is written in the Qur’an. The Qur’an provided ways that Muslims should live their lives much like the Bible. Show respect for parents, be kind to neighbors, no murder, stealing, and lying.

9. Your task
In your groups, you should have a poster, some markers or colored pencils or crayons, and a piece of paper with 1 of the 5 pillars of Islam.
Your task is to create a poster that explains this pillar.
You must make sure to be creative, have pictures, and an explanation about what to do on the poster.
You will present these if we have time.
