Photosynthesis
2
Define Photosynthesis
The process by which plants manufacture (make) carbohydrates from raw materials using energy from the light.
3
Word and Chemical equation of Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O light energy from sun C6H12O6 + 6O2 in chlorophyll Carbon + Water In the presence Glucose + Oxygen Dioxide of sunlight and chlorophyll gives:
4
The intake of carbon dioxide and water in plants
- From air (0.04% of air is carbon dioxide) CO2 gets in the cells by diffusion (be able to define it) CO2 moves in from the stomata at the bottom of the leaf Into the cytoplasm of spongy mysophyll and palisade cells then into the chloroplast.
5
Water Root hair cells by Osmosis To the xylem
To the center of the root -> stem -> leaves Once in the leaf (into the xylem) through tiny holes in xylem walls Into the chloroplast -> mesophyll / palisade cells .
6
Chlorophyll- the green part in the chloroplast
Traps light energy Converts it into chemical energy For formation of carbohydrate (sugar) For storage (starch)
7
ROY G BIV White Light - Color you see is reflected (Everything Else Absorbed) In Plants – Chlorophyll is a pigment (found in Chloroplast) Plants absorb red and blue light and reflect green
8
Limiting factors for photosynthesis
Something present in the environment in such a short supply that it restricts the life processes. For photosynthesis : Light Carbon Dioxide Water Supply Temperature
9
More light – more photosynthesis until it reaches a peak
More light beyond this point has no effect on photosynthesis. Why? Chloroplast is working at maximum capacity May be plant needs more carbon dioxide? This can be tested.
10
Carbon dioxide as limiting factor:
We can increase the rate of photosynthesis a little but again it reaches its maximum capacity.
11
In a glass house… Growers can control conditions by controlling:
- Temperature - Providing artificial light - Providing extra carbon dioxide (crops like tomatoes are grown in glass houses year round in many contries)
12
Photosynthesis investigation
See lab sheet for investigation of photosynthesis.
