Figurative Language Rhymes- words that have the same vowel sign and the same end sound. Rhythm- is the feeling of a beat (like in music) that you get as you read out loud. Stanza- a group of lines that create sort of a paragraph within a poem. Free verse- does not have a set rhythm or pattern of rhyme. They can rhyme sometimes, but will not all of the time.

Alliteration Uses words with the same beginning consonant sound. Below are some examples: Stop Standing on that Stubby Stool! Bowl of Berries I nodded, nearly napping

Alliteration Can also be repeated sounds within words, for example:

Assonance Similar to alliteration as it uses repeated sounds
Uses the same vowel sound in several words. For example: I rose and told him of my woe Try it… Which of the following sentences is the best example of assonance? A) She mines the green gemstones B) She sings a very dreamy song. C) She helps her half-grown hippo. D) She leads fleas to freedom.

Onomatopoeia- words that sound like what they mean~ hiss, clatter, bang, and quack are all examples.
Similes- comparing using like or as~Freddie is growing like a weed. Metaphors- comparing two things saying that they are the same thing~ Jay’s heart is a drum in his chest. Personification- gives an animal or an object human qualities~ Dad screamed as the copier ate page after page.
