94. ALLITERATION & ASSONANACE “Alliteration is a repetition of consonant sounds. Assonance is a repetition of vowel sounds. Both are used for dramatic, poetic, and rhetorical effect.”
2
Alliteration and Assonance are examples of Figures of Speech which are words or phrases that are used in non-literal ways for rhetorical effect.
3
Figures of Speech are important because they are used to better describe or explain a concept. Figures of Speech are not literal, so the reader must often ‘infer’ to understand them.

Figure of Speech Example 1: Alliteration B C D F G H J K L M N P Q R S T V W X Y Z
Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds. Come and clean your closet. Shut the shutter before you shudder Lazy lizards lying like lumps. Go and gather the green leaves. Boil the butter and bring it to the bank. Please put your pen away. The snake slithered silently along the sunny sidewalk.

Avoid regrets; no matter what you do, don’t ever let your family pets take lessons in kung fu.
