June 30 - Confederate A.P Hill heads towards Gettysburg in search of shoes Spots the Union cavalry led by John Buford outside of the town Hill withdrew his men

8am - Two divisions of Confederates head back to Gettysburg Events quickly escalate Lee rushes 25,000 troops to the scene Union had less than 20,000 men

10am John Reynolds and his infantry arrive at MacPherson’s ridge Reynolds is killed by a rebel sniper

2:30pm General Lee arrives Union forces retreat through Gettysburg

5:00pm - Confederates win on day 1, but do not pursue the Union army (Cemetery Hill)

Thursday, July 2 12:00am Union forces badly beaten, but control the high ground New Union commander- General Meade He arrives with reinforcements and creates a fish hook from Culp’s Hill to Cemetery Ridge

9:00am Lee orders a simultaneous attack on both the right and left flanks by Gen. Longstreet and Gen. Ewell - Lee hopes Meade shifts troops to defend the attack

11:00am - Longstreet fails to attack until 4pm giving the Union a chance to strengthen its position

3:00pm - Union General Sickles “against orders” advances a 1/2 mile in front of the main line into the Peach Orchard

4:00pm Longstreet attacks Sickles line which extends from Devil’s Den to the Peach Orchard Union forces lose Devil’s Den, but maintained control of Little Round Top Over 6,000 men are killed at Wheatfield during the battle (Sickles is wounded but encourages his men to fight on)

7:00pm General Ewell attacks the Union forces at Cemetery Hill and Culp’s Hill The Union maintain the ground from Cemetery Ridge to Big Round Top

10pm Lee’s Day 3 strategy- - Attack the center of the Union line (Pickett’s Charge) at Cemetery Ridge - General Stuart (calvary) will attack from behind, hoping that the Union would collapse and surrender

1:00pm 140 Confederate cannons fire on the center of the Union position Cannon fire almost completely misses Union forces 2:45 PM Union guns slow in order to trick Confederates

3:00pm Lewis Armistead- Led the charge (killed at the High Water mark) 14,000 Confederates move forward towards the Union (Pickett’s Charge) General Winfield Scott Hancock- In command of the center of the Union line Union artillery (canister), followed by muskets, cut the Confederate army to pieces High Water Mark – Area were one small Confederate force broke the Union line, but was overwhelmed

4:00pm - Confederate army begins to retreat leaving behind 7,500 casualties ending Pickett’s Charge General Stuart’s cavalry was never a factor

- Union wins forcing the Confederates to retreat from Gettysburg General Meade allows Lee to retreat back to Virginia, even though his is being pressured by Lincoln Total causalities Confederates - 28,000 out of 75,000 Union - 23,000 out of 88,000
