3. Stage 1: Choosing a topic & question (AS 1.1)
Task: Write a list (about 3-4) of historical topics you are interested in

Once you have a list, pick the one you would like to focus on
You have now chosen your topic area

5. Make up a question
Your AVU must focus on the causes (why something happened) or the effects (the consequences) of an event or person
A question which just asks you to describe something does not show your use of historical skills
You will now make up a question using the structure help on the next slide

7. Stage 2: Research (AS 1.2)
Now that you have a question, you need to research your topic to find information
You must use at least two different sources of information
You can do this in class and at home
The information must be relevant

13. Stage 3:Writing up your research (AS 1.3 & 1.4)
There are three things you need to do here
You must pick three key features/ themes of your topic to discuss
You need to give two points of information for each feature/ theme
Your information must be organised – in a table, under headings, in a mind map, paragraphs etc
SC: I can identify at least three key features of a theme or event and give at least two points which describe each key feature
I can organise and use the information collected to address the historical theme or event

You need to pick two main causes or impacts of your event/ theme and describe them
i.e. two reasons WHY it happened OR

19. Stage 5: Presenting your findings (AS 1.6)
You should now put together everything you have done and present your AVU to be assessed

Your chosen submission should also have a conclusion
Communicate your findings and ideas clearly
sum up your ideas, issues, findings or conclusions
Use specialist vocabulary accurately – e.g. source, cause, impact, factor, social, economic, military, political.
