4 ABOUT THE COURSEBOOK Fletcher.C.,(2012) Language for study + handouts + recommended reading 1. Designed to help SS develop the following skills: FUNCTIONAL/ACADEMIC/REASONING AND LINQUISTIC 2. Helps students muster modes of discourse and language use appropriate for academic purposes. 3. Focuses on functional performance: writing essays, reports, participating in discussions, giving presentations. 4. Topics are chosen for their general interest, contemporary relevance and overall accessibility

5 PREPARING FOR MID-TERM
Unit 1: A: Understanding: speaking – GOALS 1.Helps SS understand data presented in lectures 2. Improve SS ability to: a) recognize different types of numerical data (cardinal, ordinal, numbers, decimals, percentages, fractions etc) b) pronounce different kind of numerical data 0 – zero, oh, nil, naught etc c) simplify numerical data: rounding numbers up and down, using fractions, giving a subjective estimate: majority v. 78%

6 PREPARING FOR MID-TERM
Unit 1: B: Understanding: writing: GOALS Helps SS understand and evaluate data and graphics Improve SS ability to: Recognize and use verbs and adverbs for describing trends (Prices rose steadily…) Use N and ADJ to show trends (There was a steady rise in…) Use prep. to describe trends (The price of X fell to…compared with…) 3.SS learn how to describe trends in a graph (verbs + verb phrases, adverbs and adverbs phrases, nouns and adjectives)

15 questions/15 points Test: Comprehensive test, covers materials/handouts/worksheets/texts done in classes May include: Numbers Language to simplify data Rounding up/down Using different parts of speech to describe trends Academic vocabulary in use: numbers, verbs, phrasal verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, collocations, quantifying expressions

8 Preparation/Expectations
Coursebook: Language for study + classroom handouts (Academic vocabulary in use, reading material = course page) In the test students should: a) demonstrate understanding of and ability to use terminology related to numbers, trends, graphs. b) demonstrate ability to distinct between the language used in everyday conversation and that used in academic speech and writing, i.e. academic context (key nouns, verbs, phrasal verbs, adjectives, adverbs, numbers, quantifying expressions, metaphors and idioms)

Unit 1: C: Investigating– GOALS 1.Helps SS improve their researching skills by: Using punctuation correctly in references (prepare a list of references, use secondary citations) Paraphrasing while note-taking (keep records of research) Example: Office for National Statistics. Unit 1: D: Reporting in speech– GOALS Helps SS to improve their speaking skills through: a) using appropriate verb tenses for describing trends (SS’book pg.32-34) b) comparing data using the discourse markers while and whereas (to show contrast between two ideas within the same sentence, SB pg. 37 e.g. While the graph shows that women’s participation in STEM subjects is increasing overall, the table suggests that in some cases this isn’t actually happening. c) comparing data using multiple values and fractions. e.g. The proportion of women studying engineering in 2004 was almost twice as much as in 1997. Only about two thirds of women were studying physical/environmental science in 2004 compared to the number of women studying medicine.

Unit 1: E – Reporting in writing- GOALS Helps SS to improve their writing skills through: a) using/recognizing different tense patters and learning to follow them in literature reviews (Present and Past Simple or Present Perfect – to show currently accepted, out-of-date ideas or both) b) Building paragraphs in literature reviews using it as a subject (e.g. It is widely accepted/believed/known…) c) Building a paragraph using determiners to link ideas (e.g. pronouns/determiners – it/they/that/this) d) Using participle phrases in writing definitions e.g. A seminar is a type of class REQUIRING students to contribute their ideas based on their research of a topic. (which requires students)

12 End-of-term test Computer-based/December/Multiple choice 15 questions/15 points Covers: Unit 1, section C&D&E + handouts + recommended/required reading (links and handouts) It may include: 1. Verb tenses + stative and dynamic verbs 2. Metaphors and idioms (handouts) 3. Nouns and words they combine with (Use of English handouts) 4. Referencing (using punctuation properly) 5. Inversion (Use of English – grammar - handouts ) 6. While/whereas (discourse markers) 7. Using multiple values and fractions to compare data 9. It clauses and determiners for linking ideas 10.Using participle phrases (in place of pronouns) to write definitions 11. Additional handouts (vocabulary=course page)
