5. Media Stereotypes
Media stereotypes are simple media images based on prejudice.
Below are some images. In groups identify how the media portrays these groups in society.
1. Black male youths

6. Media Stereotypes
In the Media, Ethnic minority groups are frequently portrayed in terms of the ‘problem’ that they present to the majority population.
They sometimes are also portrayed in terms of the ‘threat’ that they represent to the society.

In the 1980s and 1990s there had been issues with Afro-Caribbean youth in inner city areas. The media frequently presented images of young Blacks as violent muggers and in doing so created police crackdowns.

The news media claim they are reporting an area of genuine public concern.
However the high volume of negative stories and images, highlight an image of minority groups as different and dangerous.
To what extent do you agree that the media are reporting an area of genuine public concern?

The Media has a large influence on the way people view the rate of crime.
Media is very selective in the way it reports crime.
It exaggerates a set of events and creates a moral panic surrounding them.
Cohen (1973) identifies a process by which the media portrays groups and individuals as criminal which is known as:
