6 Media Stereotypes In the Media, Ethnic minority groups are frequently portrayed in terms of the ‘problem’ that they present to the majority population. They sometimes are also portrayed in terms of the ‘threat’ that they represent to the society.

7 THINK PAIR SHARE Ethnic Minorityes
In the 1980s and 1990s there had been issues with Afro-Caribbean youth in inner city areas. The media frequently presented images of young Blacks as violent muggers and in doing so created police crackdowns. From your experience how do you think young Blacks are represented today in the media? THINK PAIR SHARE

8 THINK PAIR SHARE Ethnic Minorities
In the 21st Century, following a series of terrorist incidents, it became Muslims youths who were represented as dangerous fundamentalist and potential terrorist How do you think the media representation of Muslims affects people’s view of Muslims? THINK PAIR SHARE

9 The media The news media claim they are reporting an area of genuine public concern. However the high volume of negative stories and images, highlight an image of minority groups as different and dangerous. To what extent do you agree that the media are reporting an area of genuine public concern?

10 The Media The Media has a large influence on the way people view the rate of crime. Media is very selective in the way it reports crime. It exaggerates a set of events and creates a moral panic surrounding them. Cohen (1973) identifies a process by which the media portrays groups and individuals as criminal which is known as: AMPLIFICATION OF DEVIANCE

11 Amplification of Deviance
Actual event reported by media People demand that something is done More police in that area More people caught doing this crime Media reports increase Can you think of any reasons why The Media would report crime in such way?
