Autumn/Winter Autumn 2 2017 Nursery Prime Areas Specific Areas
Personal, Social and Emotional Development We will be learning to understand how our actions affect other people. We will be learning to share and take turns, whilst continuing to develop our understanding of our High Five Values. Communication and Language We will be learning to listen to each other, one to one and in small groups. We will share our ideas during talk times. Physical Development We will learn to put our coats, hats, scarves and gloves on by ourselves, as the colder weather approaches. In PE, we will be exploring different ways of moving. Our planning is linked to the EYFS framework however, we believe that the most exciting learning follows a child’s personal interests and therefore we take advantage of spontaneous learning opportunities. Church and Community We will be looking at Bible stories which lead up to the Christmas story. We will be learning about why and how we celebrate Christmas. We will take part in the school Nativity performance at St Francis Church. We will dress as stars or angels. Specific Areas Literacy We will begin ‘Letter of the Week’ and will learn the letter sounds s,a,t,p,i,n. The children will learn the alphabet names at a later stage. Mathematics We will learn how to count carefully and to recognise numerals 1-5. We will also be learning 2d shape names and properties. Understanding the World We will talk about things that happen to our family and friends. We will look at celebrations: Bonfire night and Christmas Expressive Arts and Design We will learn a variety of new songs and rhymes and will begin to add movements to music. We will explore how sounds can be changed. All of the EYFS areas are important however the areas highlighted with a star are the St Francis ‘Golden Threads’.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication and Language
Can play in a large group, extending and elaborating play ideas. Initiates play, offering cues to peers to join them. Can select and use activities and resources with help. Welcomes and values praise for what they have done. Enjoys responsibility of carrying out small tasks. Tries to help or give comfort when others are distressed. Responds to the feelings and wishes of others. Aware of own feelings, and knows that some actions and words can hurt or harm others feelings. Communication and Language Listens to others, one to one or in small groups, when conversation interests them. Listens to stories with increasing attention and recall. Understands the use of objects. Shows understanding of prepositions such as, ‘under’, ‘on top’, ‘behind’, by carrying out an action or selecting the correct picture. Beginning to use word endings. Beginning to use more complex sentences to link thoughts, using ‘and’, ‘because’. Can retell a simple past event in the correct order. Physical Development Walks upstairs or downstairs holding onto a rail, two feet to a step. Beginning to use three fingers (tripod grip) to hold a pencil. Imitates drawing simple shapes such as circles and lines. May be beginning to show preference for dominant hand. Moves freely and with pleasure and confidence in a variety of ways. Mounts steps, stairs or climbing equipment, using alternate feet. Walks downstairs, two feet to a step while carrying a small object. Can stand momentarily on one foot. Observes the effects of activity on their bodies. Understands that equipment has to be used safely. Literacy Fills in the missing word or phrase in a known rhyme, story o game, e.g. ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a …..’. Enjoys rhyming and rhythmic activities. Listens to and joins in with stories and poems, one to one and in small groups. Handles books carefully. Recognises rhythm in spoken words. Distinguishes between the different marks they make. Sometimes give meaning to marks when drawing or painting. Ascribes meaning to the marks they see in different places. Mathematics Creates and experiments with marks and symbols, representing the idea of number. Begins to make comparisons between quantities. Knows that a group of things changes in quantity when something is added or taken away. Recites numbers in order to 10. Knows that numbers identify how many objects are in a set. Beginning to represent numbers using fingers, marks on paper or pictures. Recognises numerals 1-5. Shows awareness of similarities of shapes in the environment. Shows interest in shape by sustained construction activity or by talking about shapes and arrangements. Understanding the World Beginning to have their own friends. Learns that they have similarities and differences that connect them to, and distinguish them from, others. Shows interest in the lives of those familiar to them. Remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience. Notices detailed features of objects in their environment. Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world. Can talk about some of the things they have observed such as plants, animals, natural and found objects. Knows how to operate simple equipment. Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs and pulleys or real objects, such as mobile phones or cameras. Expressive Arts and Design Beginning to move rhythmically. Imitates movement in response to music. Taps out simple repeated rhythms. Explores and learns how sounds can be changed. Uses movement to express feelings. Creates music in response to music. Sings to self and makes up simple songs. Makes up rhythms. Notices what adults do, imitating what is observed and then doing it spontaneously when the adult is not there.
