Instrumentation & process Control Hydrometer Prepared by: Purohit Gaurang Enrollment no: Date:15th September 2015 Mentor:Prof. Greeshma Nair

2 Hydrometer Different liquids have different densities. You can compare densities of different liquids by observing how the same object floats in each. If the liquid is much denser than the object, most of the object will be above the surface of the liquid. If the object is only slightly denser than the liquid, more of the object will be under the surface. A hydrometer is a tool that allows a scientist to compare the relative densities of liquids…but does not give you the actual value in g/ml or g/cm3 Place the hydrometer in each of the graduated cylinders and answer the questions in section 2 of your handout.

3 Build a Hydrometer

4 Concentrated or Dilute?
When the solute is dye, you can easily tell how concentrated the solution is by looking at it? But what if the solute is sugar or salt? Is there a way to tell how concentrated or dilute something is when it’s clear? Concentrated or Dilute?

5 A hydrometer is a device that floats in solutions.

7 Building a Hydrometer

8 Mark Off Your Straw

9 Number it Off and Nail It …
and Plug It !

10 Concentrated or Dilute?

11 Things float higher when the concentration of solute is higher.
Dead Sea

12 How does a hydrometer work?
A hydrometer floats higher in concentrated solutions and lower in dilute solutions. How does a hydrometer work?

13 Why would you need a hydrometer?
Making wine or beer.

14 What would happen to a cargo ship going from salt water to fresh water?
Oceans to Lakes

15 Why would you need a hydrometer?
On the front of boats. *Plimsoll Line

16 Hot fresh water Fresh water Hot salt water Warm salt water Cold salt water Really cold salt water

17 Thank You
