The Definition and Description of SIN
The Greek word for “sin” is hamartia The literal meaning is “to miss the mark” (Ill – Archery) When we go beyond God’s will, or don’t go far enough, or veer away from the truth into error, we sin All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23

3 common ways we commit sin 1. By disobeying God’s Law – 1 John 3:4 2. By failing to do the good we know we ought to – James 4:17 3. By going against our conscience, even if what we’re doing is not wrong in and of itself – Romans 14:23

The Different Kinds of SIN
There are internal as well as external sins The external acts of sin are obvious – Galatians 5:19 But there are also internal sins of the mind and heart – Galatians 5:20-21; Matthew 5:21-30; Mark 7:20-23

Some sins are worse than others, but ALL sin is bad! There are several lists of sins found in the Bible – Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 4:25-31; Colossian 3:5-10 Murder is obviously worse than telling a lie but they both can land a person in Hell! – Revelation 21:8; 1 John 5:16-17

The Nature and Consequences of SIN
Sin is deceitful and destructive! It makes big promises but doesn’t deliver – Hebrews 3:12-13 It lulls us in and then destroys our lives! (Ill - boiling a frog) It can destroy a good name, character, health, relationships, work, finances; it will destroy your life if you let it! Sin is progressive – Psalm 32:1-7

There are many consequences of sin It causes misery and heartache – Mark 5:1-20 It enslaves us – John 8:34; Romans 6:15-18 It separates us from God – Isaiah 59:2; 1 Peter 3:7-8 It leads to spiritual death – Romans 6:23; James 1:13-15

The Cure for SIN Jesus came to deliver us from sin – Galatians 1:4
He came to free us from the power of sin – John 8:31-32 He died to pay the penalty for our sin – Isaiah 53; Romans 3:23-26 He gave us His Spirit so that we could overcome sin – Galatians 5:16-18; 1 John 4:4; Philippians 4:13

The Cure for SIN We must Trust and Obey Jesus!
Humble yourself and put your faith in Jesus – John 3:16; 8:24 Take sin seriously! – Galatians 6:7-8 Live a life of obedience! – 1 John 1:8-9 – 2:1-3; 5:18-20
