2 Objectives to understand the structure of educational system of New Zealand ; to identify and differentiate the levels of educational system in New Zealand ; and to appreciate the levels of educational institutions in New Zealand.

3 Official name: New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa)
Capital: Wellington Continent: Oceania Official languages: English, Māori, New Zealand Sign Language The country geographically comprises two main landmasses—the North Island (or Te Ika-a-Māui), and the South Island (or Te Wai Pounamu)—and around 600 smaller islands.

4 Education system New Zealand’s education system has 3 levels:
•Early childhood education - from birth to school entry age •Primary and secondary schools - from 5 to 19 years of age (school is compulsory from 6 to 16 years of age) •Further education - higher and vocational education.

5 Early childhood education
Early childhood education (ECE) from birth to school entry age not compulsory 20 hours ECE ages of 3 and 5, a child can go to an ECE service for 20 hours a week for free.

6 types of ECE services Teacher-led services Kindergartens
paid staff has the main responsibility for children’s education and care Kindergartens qualified and registered teachers. Home-based services provide babies and young children with early childhood education either in the child’s own home or in the home of an adult educator.

7 Te Kōhanga Reo Playgroups Kōhanga reo are whānau cooperatives
aim of the programmed is to foster young children’s and parent’s knowledge of te reo Māori (language) and tïkanga Māori (culture). Playgroups The Ministry of Education (the Ministry) funds playgroups to assist with equipment and hall hire.

8 Primary and secondary schools
Primary and secondary schools are the second level of education Education is free between the ages of 5 and 19 at state schools Schooling is compulsory from age 6 to 16. Child can start school on the day they turn 5 years old The education system for schools is made up of 13 year levels Primary education starts at Year 1 and goes to Year 8 (around 5 to 12 years of age). Secondary education goes from Year 9 to Year 13 (around 13 to 17 years of age).

9 Schools: These are schools with a special character. Local Schools
Many schools have an enrolment scheme called zoning. State, state-integrated and private schools These are schools with a special character. They may have their own sets of aims and objectives They may teach a specific philosophy or religion compulsory payments They teach the national curriculum Covers subjects that are taught at primary and secondary schools and the standards students should reach in each subject. Primary -focus on foundation learning across a range of subjects and competencies but especially in literacy and numeracy Secondary- balanced curriculum, with some specialization possible in Years 11 to 13. 10 Māori-medium education (Kura Kaupapa Māori)
are schools that teach in Māori and education is based on Māori culture and values owned and funded by the state Special education National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the national senior secondary school qualification. Home and distance learning child can learn with New Zealand’s Correspondence School Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu. It uses multimedia and online learning can also study one or two courses if a subject they want to study is not available at their school teaches early childhood, primary, secondary and special needs students

11 Further education includes higher and vocational education
government partially funds state further education providers Students pay about 30% of the cost of their courses Further education providers can be state or privately owned

12 Technical and vocational education
Students may begin to specialize in vocational learning They can get help into work or further education from a number of programs and institutions. Trades academies teach trades and technology programs to students in Years 11 to 13 Institutes of technology and polytechnics teach professional and vocational education and training from introductory studies to degrees.

13 Industry training organizations
They offer training and qualifications for those sectors They funded by the government and industry. Private training establishments offer specific vocational courses at certificate and diploma level eg travel and tourism

14 Community education is a program of foundation skills
such as literacy, numeracy and language courses and personal interest topics for adults.

15 Wānanga They offer certificates, diplomas and degrees.
Some teach in specialised areas up to doctorate level. New Zealand has three wānanga state-owned Māori teaching research institutions tikanga Māori

16 university New Zealand has 8 state-funded universities
Each offer degrees in a large choice of subjects and have strengths in specialized professional degrees All are well recognized internationally
