Barriers to publication
14
Barriers to publication
Procrastination Time, Time, Time Funding $$$ Multiple co-authors (herding cats) Meeting deadlines Head space Finding joy in the process/torment in the moment Changing perspective on the data/project Preoccupation w/ flaws (perfectionism) Having high expectations of self/others Allocating time to what you want vs what gets academic credit Feeling Overwhelmed Reviewer comments—how to respond? Feeling “stuck” Hard to get started; hard to narrow thoughts down Difficult to get motivation for starting Narrowing to something measurable The “boring parts”—esp references! Changing investment/contributions for team members Finding the right journal Doing research when it’s not valued Not knowing how to start Data collection challenges (methods)
15
Barriers to publication
Time to write Identifying collaborators Collaborating on co-authoring Perfectionism Fear of not being ‘right’ Hard time finishing Stuck in ‘almost done’ Fear of about rejection Expectations Managing rejection—internalizing the feeling Writer’s block—stare at empty screen or internet self soothing behavior Anxiety Procrastination Stuck in the review process— frustration! Length of time Identifying the ‘right’ journal
16
If I waited for perfection I would never write - Margaret Atwood
Why should YOU write? Because YOUR work matters. Your ideas…….Insights ……Experiences Write your thoughts, you can influence others, PAUSE colleagues both known and yet-to-be met Colleen
17
How to begin? Know your own barriers—is it fear—of failure? Of success?
Seek out colleagues who can kindly provide feedback Set aside regular times to think, to jot. To write. Larry
18
Share one barrier breaker
19
Share one barrier breaker
Time: 1. Structure in calendar/ Designate a finite aoument of time 2. Use other work as a base; do a section at a time 3. Find a space that works—quiet/loud; alone/in a crowd? 4. Do references on down time; allocate more menial tasks to low brain power time 5. With a team: use the team accountability to get your work done Overwhelmed feeling— 6.Cultivate a team; use others for feedback and perspective 7. “Head space”—getting it down on paper! (first draft!) 8. Work in a team: have realistic expectations and deadlines
20
Share one barrier breaker
Dealing with Reviewer comments: 9. Take time away and get perspective 10. Understand the comments; appreciate as a gift of time and opinions/feedback
21
Tips for success Start Persevere Finish Find collaborators
Planning time Write a shitty first draft Persevere Revise, revise, revise Ensure clarity Get feedback Finish Dot the “I”s and cross the “T”s Find collaborators Find mentors
23
Peer Reviewing: A way to improve one’s writing
Timeliness Thorough reading with comments on: Novelty of topic/what does it add to current literature? Strengths and weaknesses of methodology Results and discussion—how do these inform the field? Comment on overall quality of writing, including organization, effectiveness of word use
24
You can help the rest of us know what the literature says
Structured literature reviews and book reviews are great ways to contribute. What questions do you want to answer? Colleen
25
What might you write about?
26
Global Mental Health and (Complete and in process--
Call for papers Upcoming: Global Mental Health and Integrated Care (Complete and in process-- Strategies for Evaluating Integrated Care in the Real World)
27
Literature Gaps in Collaborative Family Health Care
Advocacy and policymakers;—how do they enact change? Limited # of disciplines present in our literature (e.g. PharmD, Nurses, others)—how do we broaden this conversation? Review from someone outside the system—what do they think about family healthcare? Training and supervision—not much “best practice” literature about supervision/training for integrated care.
28
Literature Gaps II Are there meta analytic reviews to consolidate the information about integrated care? Dissecting best practice relating to different settings. E.g. inpt, outpt, private practice, etc. Role of Emergency Med in providing medical home; linking in to primary care. Collaborative models in EM?
29
Literature Gaps III Effectiveness of school based clinics for care for kids Cultural competence—what are best interventions for particular sub populations? Role of technology in providing care—assessment. Standardization of E.H.R. to provide standard approach to collaborative care.
30
We have a responsibility to test what actually makes a difference
We have a responsibility to test what actually makes a difference. Do your efforts help your patients feel better, live better? Does your design affect the quality of work life for your colleagues? It is hard to do research alone. This is CFHA. You know about working together. Colleen
31
Literature Gaps IV Competencies for practice across disciplines—they are published! Hooray! How do we broaden our integrated work into other settings? E.g. From public sector private practice From primary care specialty care Working in other settings, churches, shamans Expanding our work to the medical neighborhood.
32
Literature Gaps V Increasing voice of the family; greater attention to the community Professional identity development—what happens for Beh Health folks moving into Medical setting? Is there something about personality? What are the factors for success?
