1 Btec First Award in Engineering Module 1 Knowledge Organiser
– Engineering Sectors, Engineered Products and Interconnections. What is Engineering? “the branch of science, maths and technology concerned with solving problems through the design, manufacture, evaluation of solutions.” Applications of Engineering Buildings Engines Machines Structures Interconnection Products in Engineering Sectors The Importance of Analysing a Product for Future Development Could a products appearance be improved? If so how? Does a product function to the best of it’s ability? How could it be better? Does the product meet it’s users needs? What can we change to make the user happier? Could the performance of the product be improved? If so how? Is the product made out of the best materials? Is there a better or cheaper alternate? Is the manufacturing process used to make the product the best option? Is there a better more efficient method? Is the maintenance of the product expensive? Does it require specialists? Could the product be safer? Reducing the chance of the legal action Engineered Product Combination of Engineering Sectors Sat Nav Communication Electrical Automotive Ford Focus Chemical Mechanical Pacemaker Biomedical Boeing 737 Aerospace Engineering Sectors Aerospace The design, development and manufacture of products through flight. Aeroplanes, Helicopters Automotive The design, development and manufacture of vehicles. Cars, Motorbikes, Lorries Biomedical The development of devices and procedures that solve medical problems. Hip Replacements, prosthetic legs Chemical The design , processing and manufacture of equipment for the chemical industry and chemical products Petrol, Diesel, Bleach, Medicines Communication The way information is used around the globe. Mobile Phones, Social Media, Sat Nav Electrical The design, developments and manufacture of electrical products. Television, Games Console, Laptop Mechanical The design, manufacture and testing of machines and other mechanical devices. Engines, Machines, Gearboxes Health and Safety in the Workshop Environment PPE – Personal Protective Equipment Goggles – To protect eyes from injuries Apron – To protect clothing and cover up any loose clothing Clean working environment – reduces chance of injury Long Hair Tied up – Reduce chances of injury and getting tangled. Investigating an Engineered Product Basic Specification Form – What is the appearance of a product (shape, style, colour, image, looks, aesthetic appeal.) Function – What does a product do? What is its purpose? Primary and Secondary. User Requirements – What does the user want the product to do or be? Advanced Specification Performance Requirements – How does the product need to perform? What is the expectations? Material and Component Requirements – How does a material need to perform? What is the expectation of the components in the product? Ease of Manufacture – How is the product made? Is this the best option? Ease of Maintenance – How is the product maintained? Service? PAT Testing? Legal and Safety Requirements – Is there any laws or regulations that must be met by the product to be made and sold?
