Hello Teachers! Related Arts teachers have a unique perspective on the school and the students we teach. Our structure is different than a classroom teacher, but our expectations are the same. We all want the students to learn, be successful, and have good social skills. Today we are going to talk about how to support our students’ social and emotional learning. Let’s start with introductions! Be ready to share your name, school, subject you teach, and one fun thing you have done this Summer with the group.
6
Class Routine Walk in & get to seat/spot Agenda Objectives Message
Have procedure to make this quick and efficient Agenda Use pictures for K & first part of 1st grade Use words for other grade levels Objectives Students read as “I can…” statements Message Link to lesson Have a share (with class or shoulder buddy) that allows for a quick greeting that uses names Lesson Closing circle Read through the objectives, self evaluate, line up, and walk out
7
Teacher Language Think of things you find yourself repeating to your students. Share with your shoulder buddy. Direct Reinforcing Redirecting Reminding
8
Student Focused Language
Common Teacher Language I like how you lined up quietly. Thank you for cleaning up. Could you please stop talking? Are you supposed to be doing that? I like how Tracy is ready. Student Focused Language You lined up quietly. You cleaned up! Stop talking. What are you supposed to be doing? You need to be ready in 30 seconds.
9
Teacher Language Only speak in silence.
Do not repeat students’ answers/comments. Allow them to own their thoughts. Do not use language as a way to manipulate. DON’T SAY: “This group of students is ready.” Shames other students Puts a target on “this group”, dividing the sense of community DO: quietly walk to “this group” and softly say “you are quiet and ready”, but then redirect the class “be ready in 30 seconds”
10
Discipline does not equal punishment.
Battle Bad Behavior The class routine will give consistent expectations that curb behavior. Agenda & Objectives help focus students and give them expectations for the lessons. Meeting allows students to build relationships with one another and with YOU the teacher. Teacher language that focuses on student will give responsibility and reinforcement to student. Discipline does not equal punishment.
11
More Strategies… Catch small behaviors before they escalate
Take a Break Change seats Fidget toys Teacher proximity Teacher language Choices Interactive modeling Visual schedules Use a timer Ask students to comment on what is occurring I wonder… I noticed… I appreciate… Nonverbal cues/prompts Thumbs up Wink Smile “teacher face” Nod/shake head Clear throat
12
Closing Circle A quick routine (3-5 minutes for related arts classes) to close out class giving students closure and accountability. Example: clean up, get back to spots, read through objectives, students give thumbs up, sideways, or down, and line up.
