1 Where is the World’s Population Distributed?
Chapter 2: Population Key Issue #1

2 Population terms Demography: study of population characteristics
Cartogram: map that uses land area to represent a resource Population cartogram (page 47) Ecumene: place where people are living long-term Began with settlements in the Fertile Crescent Less hunting & gathering (nomadic) and more settlements

3 Population Concentrations
High Concentration East Asia ≈ 25% of World Pop. 5/6 live in China (≈21%) > half live in rural areas South Asia ≈25% of World Pop. Most live in India (≈19%) Live by Indus & Ganges R. ≈ ¾ live in rural areas Europe 1/9 of World Pop. 4 dozen countries ¾ live in urban areas Southeast Asia ≈ 14,000 islands Indonesia major country Sparse Population Dry ≈ 20% of land Resources bring people Ex. Middle East Wet Seasonal weather allows people to live here Ex. SE Asia High Tough but can be adaptable Ex. Arizona Cold Very difficult to adapt to

4 Population Density Agricultural Density Physiological Density
Used for analyzing the ability of resources to support the population that lives in the region No. of people/farmable land area Gives clues of dangers of overcrowding and overpopulation Arithmetic (Population) Density Used to identify how many people live in a given region No. of people/area of land Can be misleading Agricultural Density No. of farmers/arable land Gives clues to level of development (MDC vs. LDC)
