1. Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
How do we develop claims, find evidence from a text to support them, and explain our reasoning/thinking?
* Remember: These three elements are what make up a well rounded writing response in ELA.

2. Claim
A claim is a statement that answers a question or responds to a prompt.
A claim is typically one sentence in length.
A claim must be specific and address all parts of a question.

3. Evidence Evidence: the details from the text that support your claim.
Not all of the details or quotes from the text can be used as evidence!
It is important to have multiple pieces of evidence that prove your claim is correct.

4. Reasoning
Reasoning is the explanation that connects your claim to the evidence you used to support it.
You must explain in at least 2 sentences how the details you chose support the statement you are making and prove you are correct.

5. But…Who Killed Mr. Xavier?
The Mystery of Mr. Xavier’s Murder: With your group, you will develop a claim about what happened to Mr. Xavier and HOW, provide evidence, and then explain your reasoning using the graphic organizer provided.
Then, you will write a quick skit as a group to act out your claim.
Pay attention to detail! Take a few minutes to annotate, read carefully and silently before you start working in groups to make your claim.
