Relocated nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans – 62% of whom were American citizens 10 internment camps across the country Only Nisei (American born) were allowed to hold authority positions in the camp, which was insulting to the older generation Created an abundance of social and economic problems for Japanese Americans

Round 1 This newsreel was made by the government in the middle of 1942 to explain the government’s reasons and strategies for interning Japanese Americans. Fill out the graphic organizer during the video.

Round 1 Now complete your hypothesis.
What were some of the reasons for internment offered in the newsreel? How does the newsreel portray internment? Is it positive or negative? Who do you think the audience was for this newsreel?

Round 2 In pairs, read documents B and C. Complete the corresponding section of the Graphic Organizer. Do you find these documents more or less trustworthy than the government newsreel? Why or why not? Why is the date of the Munson Report important? Has anyone’s hypothesis changed? Why or why not?

Round 3 In pairs, read documents D and E. Complete the corresponding section of the graphic organizer. [Do not go on to “Final Hypothesis”] When you are done, go on to the “final hypothesis”. Do this individually. Use evidence from the documents to support your hypothesis. Which of these documents do you think has a better explanation of Japanese internment? Why? Why were Japanese Americans interned during World War II?
