4 Tourism to India Tourism is becoming increasingly important to India’s economy. The World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated $121 billion, or 6.4% of India's GDP, in It was responsible for 39.3 million jobs, 7.9% of total employment. Most tourism involves mass tourism – this is when large numbers of tourists visit big resorts.

5 Sustainable tourism to India
Sustainable tourism is tourism that aims to last in the long term. It involves caring for the environment so that it isn’t destroyed. This means tourists will keep returning. It ensures that the benefits from tourism are felt by local people as well as big companies. It aims to educate tourists so that they respect local people and get the most out of their holiday.

6 Your turn….. Imagine you work for a tour operator specialising in sustainable holidays and have been asked to design a itinerary for a week-long sustainable tourism holiday to Kerela in south India. Use the itinerary template you can access on Moodle to help you…. present it how you wish!  Use atlases, brochures, books on India and the internet to help you with this task. You will have 2/3 lessons to complete this task. This lesson could be completed over two lessons if you wish! 

7 And finally…. Share your itineraries with a partner. Which itinerary would be most effective in providing opportunities and reducing potential challenges in Kerela? Why? Now partner up with another pair, choose the best idea within your four then partner up with another group of four, then chose the best again – you are now a group of eight! Your teacher will now chose the winning itinerary! 

8 Your exit ticket! Can a holiday that involves flying all the way to India ever be sustainable?
