City States of Sumer The first cities in Sumer had about 10,000 residents By 2,000 BCE cities grew to around 100,000 As a result the basic political unit of Sumer combined the countryside and the city Known as a City-State

City States of Sumer City-states with strong military presence controlled larger areas City-states in Sumer fought each other to gain more farmland For protection each city state: Built stronger armies Thick walls around their cities

Rise of the Akkadians For approximately 1,000 years Sumerian city-states fought for dominance One society developed where the Tigris & Euphrates almost meet North of Sumer Akkadians Lived in peace with Sumerians for many years

Rise of the Akkadians Around 2300 BCE the Akkadian king Sargon began extending territory Built the city of Akkad (modern day Baghdad) Sargon had a permanent army Defeated all city-states & northern Mesopotamia

Established the world’s first Empire Land with different territories and peoples under a single rule Stretched from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea

Rise of the Akkadians After Sargon leaders could not keep the empire safe from other empires Later the Sumerians became the most powerful civilization in the region.
