ICS RANKINGS US News & World Report
Bren School rated 29th among U.S. computer science graduate programs (2017) Recently added “Global University” rankings. The 2015 ranking places UCI 14th in the US (35th in the world) for computer science! Huh??? U.S. ranking is based purely on reputation Global ranking mixes objective (citation, publication) data and reputation Some top subareas: Artificial intelligence / Machine learning Embedded computer systems Human-computer interaction Software engineering Databases

EXCELLENT FACULTY Professor Michael Franz is perhaps best known for his invention, with a former Ph.D. student, of the “Trace Tree” compilation technique. Franz and his research group collaborated with Mozilla to incorporate this technique into the Firefox browser, where it became the basis of the “TraceMonkey” JavaScript engine, used by hundreds of millions of people every day. The IEEE Computer Society this year honored him with a Technical Achievement Award “for pioneering contributions to just-in-time compilation and optimization and significantly advancing Web application technology.” In addition to conducting truly extraordinary research, he’s also recognized in the classroom and has been voted by UCI seniors as “Outstanding Professor of the Year.” Professor Judy Olson is the Athena Lecturer, an award given by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to women researchers who have made fundamental contributions to computer science. Professor Olson is internationally acclaimed for her research on how teams that collaborate from remote locations succeed or fail. Led by Professor Geoffrey Bowker, the Values In Design lab launched this year at the Bren School, bringing together researchers from computer science, engineering and the humanities in an effort to devise ways to design technology that is responsible and inclusive. Researchers in the lab focus on building values like privacy, community, trust, dignity, security, respect and freedom from bias into future technological systems. This summer, 36 doctoral students from North America and Europe came to UCI to work with Bren School faculty in a weeklong workshop on the subject. Pictured in the middle are two of those students working with our postdoctoral scholar, Garnet Hertz (the guy in the middle). In June, Intel announced that UCI would lead a new $12.5 million national social computing research center. Informatics Professor Paul Dourish (far right) co-leads the center with a researcher from Intel Labs (Scott Mainwaring, far left) and UCI anthropology and law professor Bill Muarer (center). UCI will serve as the hub; other participants include Cornell, Indiana University, Georgia Tech and NYU. And if you get a chance to check out the latest issue of Popular Science, out in newsstands now, our own Deva Ramanan, associate professor of computer science, has been named one of PopSci magazine’s “Brilliant 10” young scientists of 2012 for his work in bolstering the image recognition capabilities of computers. Current computer vision systems – such as the motion-capture technology used by animation studios or the Microsoft Kinect input device for game control – analyze movements of the human body and require special-purpose sensors, typically mounted on the body or near a television. Prof. Ramanan has devised a computational algorithm that allows similar analysis using only a single image or video of a person taken with a regular camera. He envisions this people-finding algorithms being used in self-driving cars.
