1 Welcome! AS Level Media Transition.
Make all you notes on the slides in this PowerPoint. Please print your slides as notes and bring them to your first lesson.

2 5 reasons you are interested in Media Studies?

3 Learning Objectives K: The difference between denotation and connotation U: How signs and symbols convey messages – semiotics! B: Analyse how for subtle colour and symbol differences change representations.

4 Key Terms: Denotation and connotation
When analysing media texts we need to think about the messages it is sending. If the thing we see is the sign, then the message we receive is the signified. Look at the colours on the next slides– What thoughts/ideas/events do you associate with them? Write these on each slide. Don’t be afraid to think deeply!

14 Now think about other signs – what do they connote(suggest)?

15

16 Well done, you have just undertaken a semiotic analysis.
Semiotics is the study of symbols and their meanings in varying cultures and contexts. All media texts can be studied in this way.

17 Is the media representative or reflective?
There is big debate about whether the media reflects society of represents society. Media boffins would argue that it is representative. BECAUSE - how can 6 billion people be accurately reflected?

18 Representation Research Task What is representation?
How does the media use it to appeal to audiences? What evidence is there that suggests representations are accurate?

19 Beyonce What genre of music does she create? Who is her target audience? How is Beyonce represented on the cover of In Style that proves this? Make your notes around the edge.

20

21 Over the next few slides…
You will see different representations of Beyonce. Using your understanding of semiotics, analyse how she has been represented differently. Make your notes around the edge of the image
