Why is Public Speaking Valuable?

Classroom public speaking opportunities allow the faculty member to create a welcoming learning environment (Bolsoni-Silva, & Loureiro, 2014). As students speak publicly, they learn self-confidence and self-efficacy (Bolsoni-Silva, & Loureiro, 2014). Student preparation to speak on a topic requires immersion into the topic, which leads to retention of the curriculum (Olson, D., 2012).

As faculty members adopt public speaking as an active engagement technique in the classroom, students will become more engaged in their own learning (Olson, D., 2012). Public speaking skills are vital to success across today’s workplace (Linney, 2007).

Faculty members are responsible to empower students to be successful beyond the classroom; public speaking gives our students a voice for all of life’s encounters (Linney, 2007).

How Can We Add Public Speaking Opportunities to the Classroom?
